Avoid distractions while working

Avoid distractions while working

You don’t need a lengthy break or something catastrophic to occur in order to distract you from completing a given task at work. According to American researchers, even a few seconds of momentary interruption can practically ruin one’s ability to complete a task. Interruptions can come in various like various forms, such as receiving a text message or the fact that a colleague just walked through the door and interrupted an important conversation. Such distractions can prove to be quite disastrous for professionals such as airplane mechanics and emergency room doctors.
The study involved around 300 subjects in a sequencebased procedure on a computer found that interruptions of about three seconds doubled the rate of errors.
The researchers were surprised to see the magnitude of effect such short interruptions can have. Since the interruptions did not last longer than each step of the main task, he observed, so the time factor wasn’t the likelier the errors.

IS SKINCARE ONE OF YOUR NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS?

IS SKINCARE ONE OF YOUR NEW YEAR
RESOLUTIONS?

Want radiant skin? Here are some tips you need to keep in mind this year...

If you are one of those who has decided to do whatever it takes to get a healthy glowing skin this year, you are not alone. Though we are already a week into the New Year, it is not too late to begin. But before you set your resolutions, make sure you have realistic and achievable goals. Also, as the months pass by, your determination could waver, so write down the important points and place it somewhere so that it never misses your eye. Here are tips that will help you achieve that almost elusive perfect skin.
First, cleanse right

This is the most basic one, and yet most essential. Be thorough with the regular
cleansing, toning and moisturising routine. Never forget to remove makeup. Use a toner to close pores, and don’t forget to keep your skin well hydrated.
Say ‘no’ to dry hands and feet

Resolve to exfoliate and moisturise your hands and feet. At night before you go to bed, scrub and wash your hands and feet, then apply some petroleum jelly on them. Massage it into your skin. Wear cotton socks to prevent the product being wiped off. And next morning delight in the visible, tangible softness of your feet.
Don’t procrastinate going to a specialist

Don’t self-medicate when it comes to skin-related problems. Go to a specialist.

Never forget the sunscreen

A must daily, for all skin types, all ages. Reapply at least twice a day or whenever you go out. Yes, even when the sky is overcast. Pick up a product with 30 or more sun protection factor.
Keep a check on what you are eating

Stay away from deep-fried, oily food. Have fresh fruits and vegetables. Drink a lot of water.
Take up some form of exercise everyday

Exercising regularly not only keeps you fit, but also helps to keep your system toxin-free.

CLEANSE YOUR SYSTEM

A proper detoxification is a must to remove toxins. Something as simple as beginning your day with a glass of warm water mixed with a teaspoon of honey and lemon juice is a good idea. An expert in dermatology suggests, “Just a simple paste of coriander leaves, mint and curry patta, mixed 1/3 parts each, taken early morning, is a good detox formula and also helps in weight control.”

TRY SOMETHING NEW

Let 2013 see the new you — go for that filler, that lip job you thought could make you feel more confident, or that laser treatment which can clear your unwanted marks. Visit a reputed dermatologist for advanced skincare options.

EXTRA ORDINARY ISSUE No shades of grey here

EXTRA ORDINARY ISSUE

No shades of grey here

There’s no sex in rape. No love. No pleasure. Except that which comes from inflicting pain. There’s no pride either, the pride that comes from killing someone for what you believe in. Rape doesn’t even empower you because power comes from defeating an enemy stronger than you. To inflict pain on someone weaker is an admission of cowardice, particularly when you attack her in a pack. So why do so many rapes, gangrapes take place every day, every few minutes in this country we so proudly call our own? And, as we all know, 85 per cent rapes are not even reported out of shame or fear of reprisal. Even when they are, in 50 per cent cases the police don’t file FIRs. As for Dalits, no one so much as raises an eyebrow when they are raped or killed. And when law makers and law enforcers do it, the State machinery goes into overdrive to deny it.
In short, a rape doesn’t occur every 20 minutes as we claim. It occurs every 2 to 3 minutes. As for molestation, it’s nonstop. There are women I know who claim they face it every
day, the moment they step out of their homes, and at times even at home. Crimes against women are not about statistics. There is a tragic inevitability about them. Women in India flirt with danger, not with men. What’s more humiliating, they have to hear homilies from those who inflict violence on them on how they ought to dress, walk, talk, behave and go to work.
Obviously something is wrong. Either with us or our women who we love to rape, molest, kill. If numbers are any indicator, it would appear there’s no place for love, romance or even pleasurable sex in our relationships. How is that possible when so much of our religion, our culture, our literature celebrate love? Are our novels fake? Our movies too? Our music? Our poetry? Did Kalidas fake it? Have we been hiding a conflict for centuries? We worship so many goddesses. We respect our mothers, our sisters and
yet when we have daughters we sulk for days on end. Our abuses are all vulgarly sexist.
I guess the problem lies in hypocrisy. We lie about all things all the time. As a nation we live in constant denial. Or else the highest planning body would not argue that an urban Indian can get by on Rs 32 a day. We talk of GDP growth, FDI in retail, economic reforms but we can’t get the simple things right. Safety for women. Drinking water. Public toilets. Shelters for the homeless. Swift justice. And you can’t just blame the Government for it. They are a bunch of incompetent idiots, true. But even when they do some things right, we are the first to destroy them. We must be the only nation in the world that loves to vandalise its own heritage. The same guy who stabs his girlfriend when she turns him away, scrawls her name with the same knife all over a historic temple wall.
Our disconnect is not only with women but with nature, wild life, street animals, children, forests, rivers, seas, hill stations, parks. Everything in fact. All things exist only to be
raped, plundered, beaten or despoiled. You can make laws stronger. You can blame the system. You can demand the death penalty. You can ask for a ban on item numbers. You can demand censorship on Facebook and Twitter. But till we, as a people, learn how to respect what we have, nothing will ever change.
Fear does not make the world better. Hope could. And we can only hope for a better, safer India if we stop blaming others and show more courage and self-esteem. The truth is if one of us had stopped that fateful night and picked up the girl who lay bleeding on the street for two hours, taken her to hospital, she would be alive today. We didn’t. We didn’t care enough. Not all the outrage, not all the candlelight marches can hide that simple, tragic fact — Rape is awful. Indifference is infinitely worse.

WANNA BE HEATHY? JUST FOLLOW WOMEN

WANNA BE HEATHY? JUST FOLLOW WOMEN

There’s nothing wrong in taking help from the opposite sex to improve your health. Here are some simple health and fitness tips that you should steal from your woman...

PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR BODY

While most men are fussy about their looks, they don’t pay attention to the first signs of health problems. Ask a woman and you’ll realise how often she checks her body. To ensure good health, pay attention, especially to your skin — has it suddenly changed colour? Have you noticed any moles? Have you developed a rash? Get to know your body more.

TAKE UP A SPIRITUAL EXERCISE CLASS

For most men, exercising means working out at the gym. However, this means that you could be missing

out on health benefits offered by other f e m a l e - d o m i n at e d forms of exercise. To boost your mental and emotional wellbeing, say experts, you should add yoga, Tai Chi or Pilates to your gym routine. Not only do these keep you physically fit, they also improve your posture and flexibility, increase your energy levels, strength and stamina and reduce stress.

GO FOR
PERIODIC
TESTS

Instead of waiting for small symptoms to become something serious, track the changes in your body by visiting your doctor periodically. Research says that while women are generally good at going for

regular checkups, men tend to ignore their symptoms. Do yourself a favour and don’t take a chance with your health, no matter how insignificant you think your symptom is.

LET YOUR GUARD DOWN

If you think women are silly for confiding every detail of their lives in their girlfriends, think again. Experts say many men are vary about opening up to others, because they think it will make them vulnerable. However, sharing your woes actually helps you bond and release stress. So, if you’re feeling low, don’t let it pent up. Instead, share your troubles with a friend and you will end up feeling better.

RUN MORE

For some strange reason, many men prefer limiting their workouts to weight-lifting and building muscles. Women, on the other hand, are likelier to choose cardio exercise. A well-rounded fitness routine should include both. No matter what your fitness goal is, aerobic exercise — it could be of any type — is a must for good health. So, hop on that treadmill once in a while.

PAMPER YOURSELF

While most women won’t think twice before heading for a pampering session, men can be less forthcoming. Take some tips from your better half and start taking a little care of yourself. Go for a spa treatment every couple of months. Benefits include reduced back pain and a better sense of well-being.

HEAL WITH HOMEOPATHY

HEAL WITH HOMEOPATHY

Survey shows 90% of psoriasis patients feel better with homeopathy

Twenty-eight-year-old Harish (name changed) showed psoriasis symptoms. Over 65% of his body was covered with psoriatic patches. During case-taking, we could trace his psoriatic distress to extreme stress — at home and the workplace. We could also trace a ‘remote connect’ to constant nagging at school, because Harish was a slow learner with a marked stammer. We deduced that it was likely that his psoriatic patches were also a result of his suppressed childhood emotions. We prescribed him the homeopathic remedy, Staphysagria. After 8-10 months of treatment, his psoriatic patches began to respond and heal.
Stress and emotional agony often ‘trigger’ psoriasis; the paradox also is most
psoriatic individuals experience a stressful sequence — a recurring pattern of psoriatic patches.
Homeopathy aims to treat the individual affected by pso
riasis, not just the disorder on the surface. In treating psoriasis, homeopathy lays the utmost emphasis on the individual’s emotional bearings, or what triggers, heightens, or relieves the condition, including stress or psychological distress, environmental factors and food sensitivities.
A study conducted in-house, at Dr Batra’s, on 78,633 skin patients, who regard our treatment as the ‘most preferred’ and scientifically ‘proven’ solution for skin disorders, showed ‘better’ in 90.3% of cases; ‘no change’ in 7.2% of cases; and, ‘not better, in spite of treatment’ in 2.5%of cases.
Clinical research studies conducted in Europe, likewise, evidenced that 80-90% of psoriatic patients treated with homeopathic remedies showed distinct improvement, with no side-effects. A study published in The Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, a conventional medical journal, also reported that psoriasis patients experienced significant improvement in
their quality of life (QoL) and reduction in their psoriasis symptoms with homeopathic treatment.

Walking wards off stroke for women

Walking wards off stroke for women

Women who devote at least three hours to walking every week are more likely to ward off strokes than their inactive cousins, says a study. “Regularly engaging in moderate recreational activity is good for your health,” said
Jose Maria Huerta of the Murcia Regional Health Authority in Spain, who led the study. The results for women who were regular walkers translated to a 43% reduction in stroke risk compared to the inactive group, Huerta said. IANS

GORGEOUS HAIR FOR YOU... Beat the frizz and deal with bad-hair days

GORGEOUS HAIR FOR YOU...

Beat the frizz and deal with bad-hair days

Another bad hair day? A glorious crown of healthy hair can really make or break your entire look. Here are some simple points that when adhered to, can make your hair healthier.
A dermatologist says, “Biotin (vitamin H) consumed daily in 10mg dosage is good for hair and nail.” The expert however, adds that it is better to get individual problems tackled by professionals — for example, dry, frizzy hair can be a sign of hormonal imbalance or thyroid deficiency or due to
malnutrition or protein deficiency. Correction of the cause works well. When your hair is dry and frizzy, a once-a-week hot oil massage followed with a normal shampoo and conditioner can help. Avoid too much colouring, perming and other chemical treatments for a few weeks. Our expert adds, “Use a zinc pyrithrone and ketoconazole containing shampoo once a week. If the scalp is too itchy, use sebowash shampoo once a week for few washes.”
Home-made hair masks and simple tips like avoiding blowdrying on high heat can keep your hair manageable.
MAKE THIS SIMPLE HAIR MASK AT HOME
Take half a cup of fenugreeek (methi) seeds. Soak it in two-anda-half cups of water overnight. Now take the soaked methi seeds and put it in a mixergrinder jar. Add some water and grind till smooth. Now apply this methi paste on your scalp. Leave it on for a while and then wash off.
WHILE SHAMPOOING YOUR HAIR...
Make sure that you concentrate on cleansing the scalp, so, gentle but firm fingers should massage the scalp along with the lather. After washing, apply a creamy conditioner. Coat every section of your hair and then wash off properly.

AVOID Heat-styling your hair or using irons and hot curlers. Let your hair dry naturally. Products like some hair styling gels that contain alcohol. Using unclean accessories. Keep your combs and brushes clean always. Washing your hair with harsh shampoos too often.

TIP

After a tiring day we usually tend to crash as soon as we reach home. Experts say it is ideal to tie your hair before you go to bed, especially if you have long hair. Tie it up in a loose braid or two plaits. Braided hair will remain better protected while you are asleep.
MASSAGE YOUR SCALP WITH OIL
Oiling your hair regularly will make a difference to the quality of your hair, say experts. Massage the oil into the scalp in slow gentle movements.
Olive, jojoba, almond or coconut oil infused with herbs that help enhance its properties, can provide the scalp some nutrition.
A nice head massage also promotes sleep and you wake up refreshed and raring to go the next day.
When you are oiling your hair, you should also apply a little to the ends.

LOSING HAIR? YOU NEED: Half a cup of methi seeds 500 ml pure coconut oil And a lot of sunlight
METHOD: Soak methi or fenugreek
seeds in coconut oil in a glass jar and leave it out under the direct rays of the sun, everyday, for a week. This oil when massaged into to your scalp thrice a week can prevent hair loss.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR COCONUT OIL BETTER

Take a double boiler (a heat-proof dish placed over boiling water) and put in 500 ml of coconut oil. Add dried hibiscus leaves and flowers, a few pieces of dried amla, Maha Bhringaraj leaves (these are available at Ayurvedic stores) and let the oil melt. You can add flavouring ingredients like rose, lavender, camomile also. Do not boil it for long. Once heated, let the oil sit for a day or two and your infused oil is ready.

HOW TO BEAT LAST NIGHT’S HANGOVER

HOW TO BEAT LAST NIGHT’S HANGOVER

As much as you may have tried to resist, letting go and getting drunk on New Year’s eve is not uncommon. But as you wake up today with the mother-of- all hangovers, instead of regretting downing all those shots, here’s how you can get over it...
Alcohol dehydrates. Hence, you need to hydrate your body — drink as much water as you can. It will cleanse your system because water removes toxins and rehydrates you. Don’t have any drink which
contains caffeine or other diuretics.
While getting out of bed may seem like an ordeal, do yourself a favour by taking a shower. This increases circulation, which will push the alcohol out of your bloodstream quicker.
If you wake up feeling sick, here’s what you should do — take an anti-vomiting pill, an antacid and go back to bed.
Add a few drops of lemon to room temperature water. The vitamin C present in lemons will help soothe your tummy.

Have a slice of plain toast or some other type of bland food. These increase blood sugar levels and ease an upset stomach. Even a spoonful of sugar will help. Alcohol depletes the level of blood sugar.
Get some more sleep. Your body needs to recover from the alcohol onslaught you have subjected yourself to.
Drink some ginger ale. A glass of flat ginger ale will soothe your stomach.
Honey can neutralise the harmful effects of alcohol because it has fructose, which competes with the metabolism of alcohol.
Chew a couple of small pieces of ginger or drink a cup of ginger tea for quick relief.
